REAL WEDDING: Amy & Nilay’s Colorful Indian Sangeet Celebration In Michigan

When Amy and Nilay contacted us as they started wedding planning, they had a dream of blending their two distinct cultures into an exciting destination wedding weekend in St. Joseph, Michigan. With Amy’s American traditions and Nilay’s rich Indian heritage, their celebration was destined to be one for the books. As a leading Michigan wedding planner and event designer, we were thrilled to help them craft a weekend that honored their love story and embraced their heritage.

There was so much beauty and excitement to capture that we’re sharing their destination wedding weekend in two parts! This real wedding inspiration starts with Friday’s vibrant Indian Sangeet, hosted in the elegant ballroom at the Inn at Harbor Shores.

Bride and Groom and wedding guests in Traditional Indian Attire Dancing at Sangeet in Michigan

The bride and groom dance with their guests all dressed in traditional Indian fashion as they kick-off their destination wedding weekend with a vibrant sangeet in West Michigan.

What is a Sangeet?

The word “Sangeet” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “sung together.” This pre-wedding celebration is all about music, dance, and joy. Amy and Nilay’s Sangeet was a magical evening where loved ones came together to perform heartfelt dances, share laughter, and revel in the excitement of the upcoming nuptials.

Guests embraced the culture wearing saree and kurta pyjama while enjoying a buffet of authentic Indian cuisine before turning their attention to the dance floor. From choreographed performances to spontaneous group dances, the energy in the room was electrifying.

Designing a Celebration Rich in Culture and Color

For the design, we leaned into Nilay’s heritage to create an atmosphere that was both vibrant and sophisticated. Bold, saturated jewel tones set the stage, with linens in shades of turquoise, royal blue, and deep purple accented by patterned napkins.

The tablescapes featured ornate gold lanterns, intricate scroll vases, and brightly colored floral arrangements by Modern Day Collective. Lush purple hydrangeas, vibrant phalaenopsis orchids, and an array of roses were enhanced by the warm glow of candles.

Naveen Productions elevated the space with gorgeous uplighting that complemented the luxurious fabric draping provided by Alpine Events. The family’s table was a true showstopper, adorned with an ornate gold sequin linen and decorated with elements from the various centerpieces. Amber glass pillar candle holders added a touch of elegance.
